Smoke on the Mountain is a bluegrass gospel musical set in the late 1930s. After a 5 year hiatus, the Sanders family has decided to play the gospel circuit once again. First stop, Mount Pleasant Baptist church, which is not far from the pickle plant! Despite efforts to appear otherwise, the hilariously imperfect natures of the family and Pastor Oglethorpe unravel throughout the evening. What ends up being endearing to the congregation is their genuine weaknesses and stregnths which are revealed through songs and stories.
MERVIN OGLETHORPE – Pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, mid 20s to late 30s. Sings either tenor or Baritone. Piano experience a plus.
BURL SANDERS – father, 40s Outgoing father, frontman, and spokesman for the family. Still adjusting to leading the family after the loss of his own mother. Plays either guitar, piano, bass, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, or any combination of these. Can sing either Tenor or Baritone, depending on casting.
VERA SANDERS – mother, 40s The true leader of the family. Feisty and hilarious – knows the scriptures inside and out, and can use them to win any argument. Plays piano, guitar, autoharp, mandolin, bass, fiddle, banjo, or any combination of these. Can sing either soprano or Alto, depending on who is cast as Denise and her vocal range.
STANLEY SANDERS – uncle, late 40s Stanley is quiet and does not agree with much of the antics from the family and the pastor. He is a real, down-to-earth man, who is not real certain about his faith in general, and thinks the old rules of church are silly. He has been away from the family for a long while, and is trying to decide if playing with the family in church is worth it now that mamma is gone. Plays either guitar, piano, bass, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, or any combination of these.
DENNIS and DENISE SANDERS – twins, 17 Extremely talented gospel musicians and singers. Both are full of naiveté and wonder. Denise is loud and completely oblivious that she is attractive. Dennis is outgoing as long as a song is playing. He is terrified of speaking publicly – which causes some concern to his mother, Vera, who is convinced he is called to be a preacher. Both roles require expert comic timing and a high level of musicianship.
JUNE SANDERS – sister, 23 Soft-spoken and gentle, she is the outsider of the family and a true comedienne. She does not sing or play an instrument, but is invaluable to the story. Her love and devotion to her faith and her family are to the detriment of her own potential; she is truly selfless and unknowingly funny!
